Walk through the bustling aisles of TAGMA and you can sense it instantly, Indian manufacturing is changing. For Vernon Pontes, Director at Alex Machine Tools, that shift is both exciting and demanding.
Customers today are no longer willing to compromise. There is a noticeable move away from importing large dies, especially from China, towards building them domestically. But with that shift comes a new expectation. These dies must meet far higher standards of flatness and precision than before.
Pontes and his team saw this coming. Their response is a new double column grinding machine series designed specifically for larger and wider dies. The first machine is close to completion and expected to roll out within a couple of months. What makes it stand out is its ability to handle complex requirements within a single setup, something typically associated with heavy duty boring machines but rarely seen in this segment. It is a focused solution born directly from what customers have been asking for.
At Alex Machine Tools, innovation is not treated as an occasional milestone. It is part of the rhythm of the business. Every six months, a new development project begins, with products typically reaching the market within a year. Pontes describes it simply. The goal is to solve the toughest challenges customers face, whether that means improving machine rigidity or refining grinding paths for better results.
Of course, the journey has not been without hurdles. Global developments have impacted key export markets, particularly in the United States, where steep tariff increases created immediate pressure. Instead of stepping back, the team worked closely with customers to find practical solutions. In some cases, shipments were redirected to alternative locations. In others, inventory was held strategically until tariff rates eased. One customer reportedly saved a significant amount through this approach, a moment Pontes recalls with a smile. It reinforced a simple belief that support should go beyond just supplying machines.
This mindset carries through to how Alex approaches sustainability as well. The company is actively integrating cleaner practices into its operations, from responsible coolant recycling to smarter waste handling. Advanced filtration systems and technologies like hydrocyclones are being used to improve efficiency while reducing environmental impact. It is not about ticking boxes, but about making meaningful improvements without compromising performance.
Looking ahead, Alex Machine Tools is setting its sights on aerospace, a sector known for its demanding standards. Identifying a gap traditionally filled by European manufacturers, the company developed India's first three-foot grinding machines for highly specialised components such as turbine blades and honeycomb structures. Early response has been encouraging, with international customers already placing orders and opening doors to new opportunities.
For Pontes, it all comes back to staying close to the customer and being willing to adapt. As India's manufacturing ambitions grow, companies like Alex are not just participating in the journey. They are helping define it, one innovation at a time.
