Scania opens first bus manufacturing facility in India

Invests Rs300 crore in bus and truck manufacturing facilities in India

Scania Commercial Vehicles India Pvt. Ltd is launching its first bus manufacturing facility in Narasapura, near Bangalore, today. The Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, will officially inaugurate the plant, which is supposed to have a current capacity of about 1,000 units per year. To reach its target, it will employ 300 employees in the first year.

In October 2013, Scania Commercial Vehicles had inaugurated its truck manufacturing facility in Narasapura, which has a current yearly capacity of manufacturing 2,500 trucks.

Scania has invested around Rs 300 crore in their combined truck and bus manufacturing facility.

Commemorating the event, President and CEO of Scania CV, Martin Lundstedt said, "The vision for Narasapura is clear - it is a world class facility serving both the Indian market and becoming a hub for exports to other markets in Asia. Scania has and remains committed to bringing global technology and manufacturing practices to the countries in which it operates. Here in India, we will always strive to create a win - win situation for our partners. The goal is to draw on local talent and competence and combine it with global experience."

Anders Grundströmer, who is the Managing Director of Scania India and Senior Vice President of the Scania Group, and Klas Dahlberg, Senior Vice President, Buses and Coaches, Scania Group joined Lundstedt.

Over the next five years, Scania aims to double its production capacity at Narasapura, aiming manufacturing 2,500 units of buses and 5000 units of trucks annually, and recruit about 800 employees by the end of 2017.
