In a landmark move to combat the capital's air pollution crisis, the Delhi government has enforced a fuel ban on all petrol vehicles over 15 years old and diesel vehicles over 10 years old. This sweeping ban, affecting more than 62 lakh vehicles within Delhi alone, is being implemented via advanced Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at 498 fuel stations, supported by rigorous on-ground enforcement by the Delhi Police and the Transport Department. Vehicles identified as "end-of-life" will no longer be allowed to refuel, and violators risk having their vehicles impounded and scrapped.
The urgency of this measure is underscored by findings from the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), which reveal that vehicles contribute a staggering 51 per cent of Delhi's local pollution. While essential for public health, the ban has sparked concern among citizens and industry stakeholders over the fate of millions of vehicles and the livelihoods dependent on them.
Suyash Gupta, Director General of the Indian Auto LPG Coalition, stated: "Delhi stands at a fundamental crossroads in its battle against rising air pollution. The current ban, while bold, will disrupt the lives of millions unless a viable alternative is offered. By promoting retrofitment to Auto LPG, we can deliver immediate relief to both vehicle owners and the environment. Auto LPG retrofitment is a proven, affordable, and scalable solution that can help Delhi achieve its clean air goals without forcing citizens to scrap their assets prematurely. The government's support in incentivising and simplifying the retrofitment process will be crucial in making this transition both practical and impactful."
Amid these challenges, experts and industry leaders are advocating a practical, sustainable solution: retrofitment to Auto LPG. By incentivising and streamlining the retrofitment process, Delhi could convert millions of older vehicles into clean, low-emission alternatives almost overnight. Auto LPG is not only cost-effective for consumers but also delivers immediate and substantial reductions in harmful emissions, helping to make our cities healthier and our air cleaner.
As Delhi implements this unprecedented ban, the path forward must balance environmental imperatives with social and economic realities. Retrofitment to clean fuels like Auto LPG represents a game-changing opportunity—one that could help Delhi, and potentially other Indian cities, breathe easier while preserving both mobility and livelihoods.
