By Staff Writer ,

Added 04 July 2025

The new entity now operates under the name UNITED MACHINING SOLUTIONS and, with total sales exceeding USD 1.5 billion

The strategic acquisition, previously announced, is now complete. With the acquisition of the GF Machining Solutions division of Georg Fischer AG, the UNITED GRINDING Group has expanded its portfolio to 15 brands. The new entity now operates under the name UNITED MACHINING SOLUTIONS and, with total sales exceeding USD 1.5 billion, has become one of the largest machine tool manufacturers in the world.

Following the acquisition of GF Machining Solutions, one of the largest global players in the machine tool industry has been created, employing around 5,000 people across more than 50 global locations. The newly formed group will retain its headquarters in Bern, Switzerland.

Stephan Nell, CEO of the new group and of the UNITED GRINDING Group, shared: "There has been a long-standing desire to bring these two companies together. Lead shareholders Rosmarie and Martin Ebner fully supported this strategically important step, authorising the necessary capital increase to turn this vision into reality. Rarely do two companies complement each other as seamlessly as UNITED GRINDING and GF Machining Solutions – in our portfolios, global presence, shared quality ethos, and corporate culture. I am confident that this merger will create exceptional value for our customers."

Fred Gaegauf, Chairman of the Board of Directors at UNITED GRINDING Group, added, "This merger has created a Swiss powerhouse in the global machine tool industry."

Optimal Synergy

With a presence in over 50 locations, a broad product portfolio, and 15 leading brands, the new group is well-positioned for long-term success.

"It is the best decision we could have made," stated Ivan Filisetti, CEO of GF Machining Solutions and a member of the new group's management board. "Our portfolios do not overlap; they complement one another perfectly. This will facilitate integration. And as a Swiss company, we share a culture of innovation and a strong digital mindset. Our joint goal is to be the partner of choice, offering far more than just premium machines, providing tailored solutions and deep expertise at a global scale."

The merger also unlocks synergies in research and development, especially in adapting to new regulatory standards. The combination of shared Swiss values and a strong international footprint creates a unique advantage.

"With more than 50 locations worldwide, few manufacturers are as close to their customers as we are," said Nell. "Our employees speak the customers' language—literally and figuratively—offering fast and expert support globally."

 Customer-First Brand Strategy

Despite the merger, the group will continue to present itself externally through its well-established brands.

"We aim to further strengthen our brands, many of which have decades-long market recognition," said Nell. "They are known for excellence and innovation, and we will continue building on that trust."

Two Divisions Under One Umbrella

The new UNITED MACHINING SOLUTIONS will operate with two divisions:

UNITED GRINDING, which includes the brands MÄGERLE, BLOHM, JUNG, STUDER, SCHAUDT, MIKROSA, WALTER, EWAG, and IRPD. These brands cover surface and profile grinding, cylindrical grinding, tool machining, and additive manufacturing.

UNITED MACHINING, comprising brands such as AGIE CHARMILLES, CHARMILLES, MIKRON MILL, LIECHTI, STEP TEC, and SYSTEM 3R. This division provides advanced solutions in high-speed milling, EDM, laser texturing and micromachining, spindles, automation, and digitisation—supported by strong global customer service.
