The hybrid scheme integrates 1 GW of solar and wind capacity with a third-party pumped-storage hydro solution, currently under test and due for commissioning in June 2025.

ArcelorMittal's largest renewable-energy venture, a 1 GW solar and wind hybrid project in Andhra Pradesh, southern India, has begun supplying clean electricity to AM/NS India, the 60:40 steel-making joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel.

Developed, constructed, and commissioned by AM Green Energy—ArcelorMittal's wholly owned renewables subsidiary—this US$ 0.7 billion project is projected to cut AM/NS India's carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually, helping to meet its target of reducing carbon intensity by 20 per cent against a 2021 baseline by 2030.

The hybrid scheme integrates 1 GW of solar and wind capacity with a third-party pumped-storage hydro solution, currently under test and due for commissioning in June 2025. Together, these assets will deliver at least 250 MW of round-the-clock power, fulfilling over 20 per cent of the energy requirements at AM/NS India's Hazira steel plant in Gujarat.

Spread across 2,400 acres—equivalent to more than 1,700 FIFA-size football pitches—the solar installation and its adjacent 700-acre wind farm now operate at full capacity. Some 1.5 million photovoltaic panels and 91 turbines will generate approximately 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours annually, enough to power almost 10 million Indian households.

Commenting on this landmark, Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, said, "Investing in renewable-energy generation is an exciting new business area for ArcelorMittal. It secures cost-effective clean energy for our steel-making operations and underpins our decarbonisation goals. Completing this large-scale project safely and efficiently in just 18 months—one of the fastest of its kind in India—reflects our commitment to sustainable growth in the country. Congratulations to everyone involved."

This India project is one of several renewables initiatives by ArcelorMittal, which currently has 2.3 GW under development across India, Brazil and Argentina. It also forms part of the company's strategic growth portfolio, expected to deliver incremental annual EBITDA of US$ 1.9 billion by end-2027.
