As manufacturers accelerate their shift towards intelligent factories, automation is no longer limited to improving productivity. It is redefining how machines are designed and controlled. At Automation Expo 2026 in Mumbai, Beckhoff Automation showcased a portfolio of integrated technologies aimed at helping manufacturers build compact, flexible and digitally connected production systems.
Through conversations with ET Now Machinist, representatives from Beckhoff highlighted how innovations in motion control, cabinet-free automation and PC-based control are shaping the future of manufacturing. Ashutosh Tarlekar, Product Specialist (Motion), emphasized the growing importance of advanced motion technologies in improving machine flexibility and productivity.
Showcasing Beckhoff's XTS (eXtended Transport System) and XPlanar solutions, he explained how magnetic levitation-based motion control enables precise product handling, flexible routing and reduced machine footprints.
He cited a customer example where XTS helped reduce machine footprint by 70% 20 while increasing productivity by 40%. "Our advanced motion technologies allow manufacturers to achieve greater flexibility, higher productivity and significantly optimized machine designs through precise, intelligent motion control," he said.
Looking ahead, Beckhoff is also expanding its integrated vision systems, enabling motion control and machine vision to be managed through a single controller for improved system efficiency.
Another key innovation highlighted at the exhibition was Beckhoff's MX-System. According to Purushottam Malshikare, Product Specialist (MX-System), the cabinet free automation platform simplifies machine architecture by replacing conventional control cabinets with modular, plug-and-play components mounted directly on machines.
"The MX-System is changing the way machines are built. By eliminating conventional control cabinets, manufacturers can achieve significant space savings and simplify maintenance and create smarter", Malshikare said.
The approach delivers up to 80% space savings, reduces electrical components by nearly 90% and incorporates advanced diagnostics that minimize downtime while simplifying installation and maintenance.
Complementing these innovations, Prasad Mahajan from Beckhoff's Sales Team explained how customer demand is increasingly centred on integrated, flexible and energy-efficient automation platforms.
Beckhoff's PC-based control architecture combines motion control, vision systems, IoT connectivity and analytics within a unified platform, enabling manufacturers to simplify machine architecture while supporting long-term digital transformation.
Mahajan said, "Our vision is to offer customers integrated automation technologies that combine flexibility, IoT, analytics and energy efficiency in a single platform." With scalable Industrial PCs and technologies including ATRO robots, MX-System, XTS and XPlanar, the company aims to serve a wide range of industries through a common automation ecosystem.
Together, these innovations reflect Beckhoff Automation's strategy of delivering integrated technologies that reduce complexity, improve operational efficiency and enable manufacturers to build smarter, more adaptable and future-ready production environments.
