BS-IV norms across India from April 1, 2017

By Niranjan Mudholkar,

Added 21 March 2017

Industry says, it will not ‘manufacture’ any BS-III vehicles from the said date

Also, it should be noted that the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, vide its notification GSR 889E dated 16.09.2016, has mandated mass emission standard for BS-VI throughout the country with effect from 1st April, 2020 to bring down emission.

SIAM has informed that the economic burden for moving to BS-VI emission norms for automobile manufacturers would be very significant as many new technologies would have to be developed and these technologies would have to be used in vehicles for meeting the requirement of BS-VI emission norms.

Some of the OEM leaders have shared with ‘The Machinist' that while they are ready to bring out BS-VI standard vehicles, they doubt if the oil marketing companies will be able to provide BS-VI standard fuel to meet the requirement. They are of the opinion that the BS-VI standards should be implemented gradually rather that giving a strict cut-off date.
