Where Does that Grease Go?

Your Choice in Grease Can Have a Major Impact on Sustainability Written By: Mike Palacios, Manager of Caterpillar Fluids, Caterpillar

Benefits of high quality greases in action

Vasavi Granites, one of India's largest granite producers, was using a multipurpose lithium grease to lubricate its wheel loader pin joints. The company had to re-grease this equipment every 17 hours of operation, leading to concerns of lost production time associated with the re-greasing process and concerns about pin life due to the abrasive nature of granite dust.

With help from its local Caterpillar Dealer, Vasavi Granites trialed a high quality Cat grease in two of its wheel loaders, extending grease intervals for this equipment to 50 hours during the trial.

After conducting the test, side-by-side performance comparisons confirmed that the high quality Cat grease delivered superior protection as compared to the lithium grease, as the equipment showed less wear even when extending the re-greasing interval by three times. By allowing for these extended grease intervals, the granite producer was able to reduce overall grease consumption, save $1,400 annually and add 58 hours of working time annually by reducing downtime.

As the real-life case study demonstrates, achieving sustainability goals doesn't always require major operational change. Instead, a simple switch to a high quality grease can deliver significant benefits, with no major increase in cost or effort.
