“MoRTH to bring mandatory Recall Policy for faulty vehicles”

While at present there is no recall policy in the country, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has initiated steps for bringing mandatory Recall Policy.

A holistic approach is proposed in the upcoming draft Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014, the latest version of which is also hosted on the website of Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

The industry has announced a voluntary code on vehicle recall in July 2012. Since July 2012, whenever a safety defect which poses risk of accident or harm to the vehicle occupant is recognized in vehicles, the manufacturers conduct a voluntary recall and offer to rectify the vehicles free of charge.

There is an increased awareness and initiatives among the vehicle manufacturers to perform recalls when necessary. Since the initiative taken by Indian industry, more than 1 million vehicles have been recalled.
